The Assessor is responsible for discovery, listing, and valuing all property in Natchitoches Parish for ad valorem tax purposes. This property includes all Real Estate, all Business (Personal Property), Movable, Oil & Gas Property and Equipment. The Assessor's duties are to ensure all property is assessed in a fair and equitable manner. At the same time, the Assessor has to make certain that the assessments are made according to the Constitution and the Revised Statutes of the State of Louisiana , which are passed by the Legislature. The Assessor is also responsible for filing the annual Tax Roll with the Louisiana Tax Commission. In addition, the Assessor must maintain the property maps for each parcel of real estate and maintain the legal description and ownership inventory of each parcel.
The Tax Collector, which is the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff, is responsible for sending tax bills and collecting taxes based on the assessments and the millage rates. The annual parish tax bills are sent out in the latter part of the year and are due by December 31st of that year.
Each municipality within the parish also mails and collects taxes based on the assessments and the millage rates for that town. The municipality sets the millage rates or tax rates as authorized by law.
The different governing bodies within the parish sets millage rates for the parish. These governing bodies include the school board, parish government, law enforcement district, and several others. Also there may be additional millages set for the individual fire districts, water districts, etc. These millages depend upon where the property is located in the parish.
